A potential way to make the package CRAN-safe, and easier to keep up-to-date with ADMB/tpl improvements, would be to include a function for downloading binary blobs from the blob-builder. The package would come without binary blobs by default, and the user would have to run the function to download them to the right place. The only disadvantage I can think of is that this would require a little more work for off-line installation.

Dear Ben Bolker,
Is the blob-builder still active? In case it's not (as it looks from its webpage), would it make sense to have the binaries hosted on a dedicated github repo (at least as a temporary fix) and a "setup" function as the one you describe?
I personally second your suggestion and I guess it wouldn't be problematic for users to run such a function after the installation of the package (it would be much easier than downloading ADMB, re-building glmmadmb.tpl and putting the resulting binary into the right place).
Best,
Gionata.
