when trying to run tests i get this error:

fixed by just downgrading to ava 2

AVA 2 is unmaintained so that hardly seems like a solution.

You need to use an ava.config.cjs CommonJS file for this. Or, you can opt-in to AVA 4's behavior which is available experimentally: https://github.com/avajs/ava/blob/master/docs/06-configuration.md#next-generation-configuration
