I've autogenerated lists in other repos and I've also seen doc guides that walk through a newcomers first pull request as adding their name to contributors.md. When Johnny and I chatted he also suggested that we may want to standardized the format in a way that will accommodate thousands of contributors into a chart.

It would be really helpful for me if discord handles were listed in cases that they are different from github handles, but it's also worth noting that you can change your profile name within a server in Discord such that none of your other servers display it, if people were comfortable with that.
