Characterize behavior with "weird routes"

Polar routes, routes that cross hemisphere boundaries (equator and 0/180 longitude), and very large or very small routes could conceivably be problematic. Issues at extreme scales are not a huge concern since the target activities (running, cycling, hiking, etc) occur at intermediate scales, but it would nonetheless be nice to work correctly in all cases.
