lazyLoad triggers multiple image downloads on Safari

When using lazyLoad in current Safari (Version 11.1 (13605.1.33.1.2)) I see that images are loaded multiple times.
In the Codebox Example below I see them being loaded twice or three times. But in another example in my application I see up to 11 simultaneous loads.
