It appears in the kitchen sink that this is not possible, but does someone know for sure? I'd love to be able to build out a window using some nicer fonts.

Ace assumes at the moment that every character has the same height and width. That's why only mono space fonts are supported. I do want to relax this limitation by using the technique used by CodeMirror2. Follow issue #460 for tracking the progress.
