Hi Ned and Duane,
Where can I find the BIOMASS and SIZECOMP data for 2023 surveys?
I already have the catch, haul, and length data.
Thanks

For the Gulf, it looks to me like they are interested in stratum-level biomass and length composition which you can find in these two tables GOA.BIOMASS_STRATUM and GOA.SIZECOMP_STRATUM.

Hi there,
The Biomass table that we received in the past includes:

The Sizecomp table includes:

These two tables would include full time series

When you say "full time series" you're referring to just the Gulf of Alaska for this request, right?

For each of the conducted surveys - including Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands too.

Hi All,

Attached below are the catch, haul, length data for the 2023 EBS, NBS, & GOA surveys.
Also attached are the GOA halibut biomass and size comp data for all years.
Please look over the data for correctness and let me know if you need changes made.

I will get the EBS & NBS biomass and size comp data to you early next week.

Hi Barbara,
Our EBS/NBS data manager is out today - we will get the EBS and NBS sizecomp and biomass data to you tomorrow (Tuesday).

Thank you for sharing the requested data - and we look forward to receiving the remaining tables.

We will let you know if we have any questions as we work through our stock assessment data prep.

Hi @NancyRoberson,

Thanks for very efficiently accommodating IPHC's stock assessment data needs.

We have one additional request. In the past, we have been provided with the total expanded biomass estimates for the GOA (and AI) rather than the strata-specific estimates only. The EBS and NBS results include stratum 999 which represents the total, but not the GOA file.

We are not clear whether there are any additional methods beyond summing the strata and calculating the combined variance, but for consistency with the historical series and quantities used elsewhere, we would prefer to use the AFSC’s official “total” biomass estimate rather than calculating it by ourselves. Is this something that can be easily added to our request?

Total Biomass is available for both Gulf and Alaska surveys on the AKFIN public-facing database (https://akfin.psmfc.org/). You will need to set up an account if you don't already have one though.

Hi Basia,

I believe these are the halibut total biomass data you are requesting - they are the same as the the file you sent me except that they include 2022 and 2023 data.

GOA_BIOMASS_TOTAL_HALIBUT.xlsx

I need to defer the following question to Ned
" Our main concern is the consistency of methods applied. As mentioned earlier, it’s not clear to us whether there are any additional methods beyond summing the strata and calculating the combined variance from the biomass file we already received."

Sorry for the delayed response. This one got lost in the mix!

The details for our standard biomass estimation techniques and the code that currently generates them are documented in the gapindex repository on GitHub.com and follow the methods described by Alverson and Pereyra (1969) and Wakabayashi et al. (1985). These are the techniques we've been using for the last few decades to generate our design-based bottom trawl estimates of abundance in Alaska.

Alverson, D. L. and Pereyra, W. T. 1969. Demersal fish explorations in the Northeastern {Pacific Ocean} -- An evaluation of exploratory fishing methods and analytical approaches to stock size and yield forecasts. J. Fish. Res. Bd. Can. 26(8):1985-2001. doi = {10.1139/f69-188}

Wakabayashi, K., R. G. Bakkala, and M. S. Alton. 1985. Methods of the Japan demersal trawl surveys, p. 7-29. In R. G. Bakkala and K. Wakabayashi (Editors), Results of cooperative Japan groundfish investigations in the Bering Sea during May-August 1979. Int. N. Pac. Fish. Comm. Bull. 44.
