Aparentemente, o Node 9 tem ESM como uma feature experimental. Os imports do Node 9 não suportam NODE_PATH:

Queremos aceitar isso e usar o NODE_PATH ou não adicionamos isso ao projeto para sermos mais compatíveis com o sistema de módulos do Node 9?

Por mim a gente pode continuar sem o babel e atualizar pro Node 9 e usar o ESM, afinal, esse é um projeto pra estudos então não tem problemas em utilizar uma tecnologia que ainda tá sendo testada. @lucasviola o que tu acha?
