Show a placeholder of images by scaling down to a few pixels to get a placeholder color of the right dimensions. This will prevent awkward reflows of the page as images load.

Dimensions and color of images will need to be processed on the server, which is a job for Aperture.

Probably stick this metadata about the image into the refs object.
