All of a sudden now none of the games I have are starting, such as Half Life, Killing Floor, Amnesia, TF2 or TF2 beta. Please note it is not this issue #28 . Nothing comes up. My icon in the bottom corner goes green for a fraction of a second, then blue again. I have no idea what is wrong.

I have steam under /opt and not in /home, if that is of any help. Also a relative uses another account with this computer.

My specs are

Would you close steam, run it again inside a terminal and load a game - paste any useful information that might find the error.

Have you checked this:
/bin/sh: 1: /opt/steam/Steam/SteamApps/nammi_namm/Team Fortress 2/hl2.sh: Permission denied

I double checked to see if my user account has complete write access to /opt/steam. It has full access without sudo. So I'm not sure what the problem is.

How are you running steam? You mention sudo, that shouldn’t be used…
Did you copy these files from an existing install? Did you ‘verify game cache’ in game’s properties?

I ran it in the default way for a long time. When it was in the home folder. I have two harddrives, one with /, another with /home. I made a folder in /opt and assigned it as part of my account with rights to change and delete everything. Then moved/copied existing Steam into that, Steam prompted a window about it and I selected the new folder. All fine and dandy for for a while then this happens. Then just recently I was paying around with one of my game settings and verified the game cash, defragmented it (which did nothing really). Then it didn't start, or any. I didn't think it had anything to do with that, since the problem applied to everything I had installed, not just the one game I did the 'verify game cashe' with.

What I meant with sudo was using "sudo nautilus" when I made that folder.

What filesystem type (ext3, xfs etc) is /opt/steam? Could you provide the output of ls -la /opt/steam/Steam/SteamApps/nammi_namm/Team Fortress 2/ please.
This does seem odd, so the more information the better.

Everything is Ext4, there is no other operating system associated with this computer either.

I get:

You don’t have execute permission on hl2.sh (the issue), and all the files are owned by root (not a good idea).
Need to do a recursive chown to take these files as yours, or your users group, to be able to run this.
Steam doesn’t currently verify permission when it checks the cache, see #699

This is mighty informative. It explains why everything choked like that.
But, I'm sure I did tick the "Apply permissions to enclosed files" again after this happened.

Okay that worked for me. Thanks!

If anyone is looking this up what I did was "chown -R nameofwhateveryourLinuxusernameis /opt/steam"
