TunnlTo breaks connections in vmware bridged virtual machines

ping 1.1.1.1 works but even when it's set as DNS ping google.com ( pinging anything basically) immediately says

accessing router by IP http://192.168.1.1/ also works
Adding 172.217.168.4 www.google.com to hosts makes www.google.com work
So it's only DNS that's broken for some reason
PS: I might need to get through https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/networking/dns/troubleshoot/troubleshoot-dns-server but I don't want to.
