AppImage may need to support newer format/compression? #674
Comments
I get the same behavior, using 1.0rc4 at https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD-Bundle/releases/tag/1.0rc4. Here is the output of running appimagelauncherd in a terminal, which confirms that the cause of the problem is indeed compression:
|
This happend also for the FreeCAD 1.0 version. FreeCAD uses another compression algorithm which is obviously not supported by AppimageLauncher. The only solution at the moment is to remove AppimageLauncher from your system. |
Just confirmed it with FreeCAD 1.0. They must be using a non-standard runtime. Unfortunately, they don't reveal which one it is. AppImageLauncher doesn't use its own runtime, it extracts the runtime from the AppImage itself... |

The culprit is libappimage. Investigating. |
FreeCAD developer here. The This compression format is both smaller, but also loads much faster and addresses a major complaint our users have had about startup times, but is incompatible with the installed Users have been able to run FreeCAD and the other recently built AppImages after uninstalling |
Aware of that, update is in the pipeline already. I just need a few days. It's a lot of changes at once. |
Will be great when the update comes out. I found AppImageLauncher a week ago, was thrilled to finally have appimages integrated into the system easily, and now I downloaded latest FreeCAD 🫠 |
|
Hi there, same problem with Navicat image:
Worked just fine on Ubuntu 20. |
That conclusion is wrong. It's libappimage that needs to be updated in the distribution. A new version of AppImageLauncher is on the way, the packaging side of things has been fixed (except one minor issue), and also a bunch of bug fixes have been pushed already. This stuff hasn't made it into the main branch yet, though. |

Describe the bug
I use AppImage to install FreeCad, and recently installing the latest FreeCad release failed. After some investigation turns out FreeCad started using a different format that AppImageLauncher doesn't seem to support. Other AppImage tools do (Gear Lever).
https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD-Bundle/releases
Expected behavior
AppImageLauncher should support, install, and run any/all AppImage formats
Steps to reproduce the issue
Download App Image
Click to run AppImageLauncher
Select install or run
Nothing happens

Installed AppImageLauncher version
Not sure - I uninstalled AppImageLauncher so I could install Gear Lever so i could keep working. It was likely the latest.
