Checklist

  • I made sure that there are no existing issues - open or closed - which I could contribute my information to.
  • I have read the FAQ and my problem isn't listed.
  • I'm aware that this is a request for NewPipe itself and that requests for adding a new service need to be made at NewPipeExtractor.
  • I have taken the time to fill in all the required details. I understand that the feature request will be dismissed otherwise.
  • This issue contains only one feature request.
  • I have read and understood the contribution guidelines.

Feature description

I know that NewPipe can PLAY videos (from youtube), but I DON'T know if NewPipe can play videos that are on our device (because we downloaded them), so if NewPipe cannot play videos that are on our device, I ask that the ability to do that will be added to NewPipe. Also, if that ability DOES get added to NewPipe, I ask that it can also support being able to select an EXTERNAL subtitles file (while playing a downloaded video). The reason is explained in the section "Why do you want this feature?".

Why do you want this feature?

I want to like (android) VLC, but it's ability to play MOST (maybe all) videos along with an EXTERNAL subtitles file is just BROKEN. The developers of (android) VLC either don't or can't figure out how to fix that, because this has been a problem for them for a LONG time now. My hearing is great, but that means NOTHING if a movie that I'm watching starts talking in chinese, so having the option of being able to select an EXTERNAL subtitles file is important.

Since it feels as if (android) VLC will never get that fixed, & since NewPipe can play videos, I am asking for this feature to be added (or for somebody to tell me that NewPipe can already do this if that's the case).

I'm referring specifically to EXTERNAL subtitles files because I doubt that I have or could even FIND anything that has INTERNAL subtitles files.

Additional information

If this feature request gets denied (I know that it's not necessary for DOWNLOADING (youtube) videos), then does anybody know of any (android) video players that have WORKING support for playing downloaded videos & EXTERNAL subtitles files? Names or links will be more helpful than waiting for VLC's developers to never fix that problem.

This feature was rejected. See: #478

External video playback is still quite buggy. However, 360p, 720p and 1080p resolutions are mostly stable. You may reconsider using Just or Nova
