When installing symbols, the symbols are added to the default style. Each XML file gets its own tag in the style, meaning that the symbols of the XML files are grouped together under that tag (the tag name reflects the file name). In addition to the tags for the XML files in the collection, there is one more tag, that does not contain any symbols, and that has the name of the collection. The tags can be observed in the Style Manager - see the screenshot below, with the Conveyor belt flows and Distance Measurement collections as examples (each of them has one XML symbol file).
This seems to have been the behaviour since the port to QGIS 3. It probably has to do with a restructuring of the QGIS style documents.
