Looks like there were two TEX version running on ITS:

  • The original SAIL version, ported to ITS by Guy Steele (according to Wikipedia).
  • TEX82, the Pascal rewrite.

The last sentence in AI WP 229 "*A Primer for TEX Users" is this:

Direct mail about bugs, problems, compliments etc. to DCB@AI.

@ancienthacker, does this offer still stand? :-)

Wow! Blast from the past! Sure, @larsbrinkhoff, glad to help if I can :). At least from 1981 or 1982, which is when I wrote the yTeX macros, we were running TeX82, both driving the XGP and an AlphaGraphics typesetter at Stanford. At least one of PHW's books was produced that way.

Thanks @ancienthacker! That confirms MIT had both the SAIL and the Pascal versions running.
