Purpose:
Needed to assess the new baseline f.cam6_3_153.FLTHIST_ne30.001 (#516).
This is expected that this configuration produces the same as f.cam6_3_153.FLTHIST_ne30.001.

Description:
This is a FLTHIST run is based on cam6_3_132 + all the mods from 82b (#508).

This run is completed.

We want to compare:

  • this run f.cam6_3_132.FLTHIST_ne30.82b_mods.001 (using cam6_3_132 + 82b mods)
  • with f.cam6_3_153.FLTHIST_ne30.001 (f.cam6_3_153.FLTHIST_ne30.001 #516) (using cam6_3_153 + 82b mods)

Both runs used the same namelist tuning parameters and include the bugfix for gustiness

Over all, the climate is not very different but there are differences in the SW that looks like more than variability.

I don't know whether the change in aerosol species could explain these? Or something else?

The changes in SWCF look largest over the Himalayas and high latitude NH land. There are big changes in FSNTC over the same areas. Makes me think that something about snow might have changed.

Looks like the ctsm externals changed from ctsm5.1.dev142 -> ctsm5.1.dev145.

Details:
cam tag cam6_3_132 uses ctsm5.1.dev139
cesm tag cesm2_3_alpha16g uses ctsm5.1.dev142
cam tag cam6_3_153 uses ctsm5.1.dev145

Julio is on to something w/ the snow - ctsm5.1.dev145 is a SNICAR PR!

How we read in topography has changed slightly: cam6_3_132 topo is read in on physics grid, mapped to GLL and then mapped back to physics grid (we did that to remove noise in derived variables like PSL). In CAM6_3_153 we read in topography on the GLL grid and map to physics grid. So slight difference there ...

@cecilehannay Here is code mod to revert reading in PHIS on the GLL grid:
