error: you don't have permisson for "status"

I'm getting this error in both ncmpcpp and mpc. In mpc the line shows as "MPD error: you don't have permission for "status""

Yet ncmpcpp appears to work fine, it just shows the error on the track progress bar above the status line. The status line shows the status too so I'm really not even sure what this error is about but I'd really like to know how to make it go away.

I'm not on the most recent version because I'm using the repo from MPD (which is still newer than the Debian one.)

OP had been updated with config file.

I don't know where the output of mpd --verbose is.

I'm not sure what else you need?

But I very much want MPD to require a password. I like passwords! (even if it is a low security one because it's stored in plaintext.)
