BigBlueButton is an open source web conferencing system for online learning. The goal of the project is to enable course providers to effectively engage remote students anywhere in the world. The project extends many of its core features to focus on enabling the tutors to engage with learners which among other uses cases cover: Full online classes/courses, Flipped classroom, Group Collaboration and Tutoring/virtual office hours.
BigBlueButton supports real-time sharing of slides (including whiteboard), audio, video, chat, emojis, breakout rooms, and screen. It also record all content for later playback.
Like ILIAS, BigBlueButton is open source. The BigBlueButton project was started in 2008 by Blindside Networks.
The BigBlueButton ILIAS plugin enables you to:
- Create links to online sessions within any ILIAS Repository Object
- Restrict participants from joining a session until a moderator joins the session
- Launch BigBlueButton in a separate window
- Create a custom welcome message that appears at the top of the chat window when joining the session
- Record a session
- Access and manage recording
- Limit the maximum number of participants
- Download MP4 videos(see Page "Downloads")
- Join meetings over a dial number
- Join sessions as a guest
- BigBlueButton uses the open standard WebRTC, which is supported by more and more browsers. Currently, Google Chrome, the Chromium-based browser Microsoft Edge or, with limitations, Mozilla Firefox are recommended. You can also use Safari Mobile from iOS 12.2 and Chrome Mobile from Android 6.0. Microsoft Internet Explorer and older Edge versions are not supported.
- The firewall you are using must not block the following ports: TCP/IP ports 80/443 (for HTTP/HTTPS) and UDP ports in the range 16384 - 32768 (Reference).
- To transfer your screen (desktop sharing), you should use Google Chrome and have a high-performance Internet connection. We also recommend moderators and presenters to use a wired network (no WLAN).
