Display of existence of unread comments is not working

The feature that the existence of unread comments is visible via the comments button in the navbar (it is the colored in blue) seems to be broken. Whether unread comments exist for a given user is stored in the unread_comments column in the users table. Its value is updated in the comments_controller (which is a modified version of the commontator gems's own such controller) and the readers_controller. I would suppose that the problem lies within the comments_controller.
