Based loosely on a technology developed in response to a account of a geosynchronous satellite, providing a space elevator, Tethered Towers uses a tripod of high tensile strength nylon weather balloons (3 to 16 ft in diameter each) connected to a base station at the Earth’s with a ribbon that varies in length between 300 and 11,000 ft, providing a hardwired communications network. The variables in altitude and balloon size give us versatility in the size and capabilities of the sensors we deploy. How it works Continually scans passively for smoke and infrared spikes to identify a new fire. As a fire becomes fully involved, system identifies hotspots, shifting wind directions, and hazardous particulate matter in the air. Communicates automatically with fire response and other emergency management authorities. Pinpoints locations of hotspots through ribbon sensor triangulation and Tethered Tower placement. Prototype is a single Tethered Tower, with future versions clustering seven tower/balloon pairs (one in center, ringed by six others). At 1000 ft altitude, each Tethered Tower provides nearly a square mile of coverage. Potential clients King county disaster response groups says county need to monitor smoke, at different altitudes based on wind direction. Homeland Security. Goals Key goals for RHOK3: V1 product by the end of conference. Key goals for 2012: echolocation, observations, communications, weather monitoring. V1 (RHOK3 Seattle) Scaled back from weather and wireless, V1 is a simple columnal smoke and particle detector, with a single atmospheric balloon, hardwired down along the outside corners of buildings in cities, producing a high-resolution particle flow map and smoke plume tracking at various altitudes. Programmed Arduino board to report over USB when either of the particle detectors goes off (there are currently two detectors on each ribbon; commerical deployment will use seven ribbons). V2 Zero infrastructure network in 2 hours. An umbrella of wireless internet and coverage comprising balloons, each a wifi router, for comprehensive coverage for the emergency responder. V3 Add a weather station to each Tethered Tower, with a hardwired connection down the tether. Any balloon can transmit collective data to a receiver (e.g., laptop) at the base station. V4 Add a camera system and audio. The cameras will provide infrared, pan/zoom/tilt, and the audio uses echolocation to id type and source point of gunfire.
