This looks like a reasonable replacement for the standard search module, http://drupal.org/project/apachesolr
(and indeed is supposed to be the "de facto standard replacement"), there are various plugins like http://drupal.org/project/apachesolr_views that seem like they could be quite powerful (blog post: http://www.acquia.com/blog/views-3-apache-solr-acquia-drupal-future-search).

Notably there are modules that allow it to integrate with groups: http://drupal.org/project/apachesolr_og and with users: http://drupal.org/project/apachesolr_user -- and that provide some stats about search behavior: http://drupal.org/project/apachesolr_stats

I don't know how difficult it will be to get it all up and running to make experiments, but it's popular so it can't be that bad.

Since there's not a lot of point in installing everything twice, I figure I'll get this going on the U Waterloo server as I build the "staging environment" for our final integrated deployment of "the new PlanetMath"".

I got the thing installed and it seems to do just fine at finding articles. The admin console also gives me a sense of security... (http://beta.planetmath.org:8983/solr). Closing.
