At the moment the colors are lightened and darkened in a linear fashion. This results in some drastic transitions, especially in the lightest and darkest colors vice-versa the middle colors are sometimes a bit too similar.

The choice of a custom multiplier or curve for the interpolation would make these transitions more smooth.
