I also had similar concepts but didn't yet test mostly due to capacity to detect mosquitoes. 1080p camera have like a pixel changing to detect and track them (without lenses).
That's why I question the effectiveness but you may have tried it.
I guess we could sweep the visual space or zoom in some areas with moving pixels, or such but that makes it a LOT more complex. My current idea is to use a split mirror so that the laser and camera centre align, avoiding any Z axis. This also allows installing lenses.
The human/pet detection may be using a PIR sensor (simplest) or a presence sensor (more expensive), or HomeAssistant.

If this is actually effective, then that is epic. We need a YouTube video of a calibrated one in action... A video would inspire a lot of usage of this repo and potentially improve it!
