This morning @poikilotherm and I played very briefly with new beta thread support in Matrix/Element. In Element, you have to switch to the beta version to try it.

Thankfully, messages in threads are still logged to https://view.matrix.org/alias/%23dataverse:matrix.org but they seem to be interspersed with regular messages and messages from other threads. That is, the display is based on timestamp rather than any sort of grouping. Perhaps we should open an issue at https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-static about this once we've thought about what we want.

I'm also concerned about data liberation. I haven't set up any data liberation of Matrix data yet but threads will complicate things, I imagine. There is a dedicated issue about data liberation here:

For now @poikilotherm and I decided we'd avoid using threads.

Hmm, threads look better in the new logger, I think:

I hate to say it but threads don't look great at https://archive.matrix.org/r/dataverse:matrix.org

Threads look much better in Element:

Maybe we should still discourage the use of threads. I'm not sure. We're sort of thinking about moving to Zulip anyway:

We switched to Zulip so this is no longer relevant. Closing.
