Navigation links are not displayed due to Hugo 0.84

Describe the bug

It is not really wowchemy related but rather its compatibility with hugo 0.84. Using this hugo version, the navigation links on the templates (or any wowchemy enabled website) are not displayed.

There is a related issue on hugo repo: gohugoio/hugo#8672 but the suggested fix does not work for me.

To Reproduce

1. upgrade hugo to 0.84
2.  git clone https://github.com/wowchemy/starter-hugo-academic.git
3. cd starter-hugo-academic ; hugo serve
4. No navigation bar displayed

Expected behavior

Technical details:

• Link to your GitHub project:
• Wowchemy Version (from your go.mod): from the starter site
• Hugo Version (run hugo version): 0.84
• Browser/OS: safari
• Wowchemy Template (e.g. Academic):starter-hugo-academic
