Pindy opens the meeting at 1600 (GMT)

Frameworks for measuring carbon emissions in software development.
Pindy reviewed the updated vendor diagram, which includes compliance and governance elements. In addition, Pindy is actively documenting project management frameworks, focusing on energy and carbon considerations and linking them to relevant academic papers. Pindy is also analyzing the latest articles from 2024 that discuss measuring carbon in software. Furthermore, Pindy is identifying other organizations, such as sustainability IT organizations and fin ops consortiums, that are also working on measuring carbon emissions in software development. Pindy is sharing their progress on creating a diagram for measuring carbon emissions in software development, emphasising industry-specific frameworks and tools. During a conversation with Sean O, Pindy discussed the interplay between different frameworks and tools for tracking carbon emissions and sustainability in software development, focusing on ad tech and virtual backgrounds.

Creating a decision tree for IT projects to assess energy and greenhouse gas emissions.
Pindy recommended creating a decision tree that can assist organizations in selecting the most suitable tools for their web-based applications. Pindy and Sean O discussed integrating questions into a diagram to depict a transformation journey and the possibility of incorporating questions into a diagram for a research paper. Pindy and Sean plan to collaborate on simplifying the diagram and workshopping ideas for it.

Transforming an organization's sustainability and emissions tracking.
Sean has suggested holding a workshop to finalize the mirror board before mid-July to avoid the summer holiday season. Pindy estimates it will take 3-4 weeks to settle the workshop details, find the right candidates, and circulate the invites. Pindy and Sean O have discussed the timing of the workshop and the need for a narrative around the process. They plan to write a narrative about their steps to reach this point, with Sean O helping to write it. They have also discussed sustainability work and project management tools for organizations. They plan to present the mirror board to the standard working group at the next meeting to visualize the work.

Action Items

  • Add questions to diagrams linking them to different sections.
  • Draft a narrative providing context around the project work and steps taken so far.
  • Present work to the Standards WG at the next meeting to update them and get feedback.
  • Plan a workshop inviting additional participants after refining materials in late May/early June.
  • Take a copy of the existing diagram to work on adding questions without modifying the original.
