It would be useful to have better support for this feature. Currently, one has to use the work-around that's given in #600 and that's unintuitive and complicated. For instance, it took me few days of (admittedly not intensive) searching to find that solution, and I'm not quite sure how to generalize it to plot legends or axis labels yet.

There is also a title() function, example here. And there is discussion in #1169 about a new figure() function, which will replace vstack, hstack, gridstack - please add any design suggestions there.
For common legends and axis labels, have you tried using Geom.subplot_grid ?
