Description

Hey there! As we strive to make our app more accessible and inclusive, I propose a new feature: a colour-blind mode!

As we all know, only some see colours the same way. People with colour vision deficiencies (a.k.a. colour blindness) may have difficulty distinguishing between certain colours, especially red and green. This can make it challenging for them to use our app and enjoy its full functionality.

To address this issue, we can create a new mode that adjusts the colours used in the app to make them more distinguishable for users with different types of colour blindness. This can include:

  • Using high-contrast colour combinations that meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) standards
  • Providing alternative visual cues, such as patterns, shapes, and icons, to convey information
  • Avoiding over-reliance on red and green as the primary means of conveying information
  • Testing our design with a colour blindness simulator to ensure its effectiveness

Why It Matters

By adding a colour-blind mode, we can improve the accessibility and usability of our app for a significant portion of our users. According to the National Eye Institute, around 8% of men and 0.5% of women with Northern European ancestry have some form of red-green colour blindness. That's a sizeable chunk of our potential user base!

Furthermore, designing an app that is inclusive and accessible to people with disabilities is not only the right thing to do but also good for business. Inclusive design can help us reach a wider audience, increase customer loyalty, and drive innovation.

How It Can Be Implemented

To implement this feature, we can:

  1. Research the best practices for designing a colour-blind mode
  2. Create a new colour-blind mode in the app's settings that users can toggle on or off.
  3. Develop a new colour scheme that meets users' needs with different types of colour blindness while maintaining the app's branding and visual identity.
  4. Test the new mode using a colour blindness simulator and get feedback from real users with colour vision deficiencies.
  5. Iterate and refine the design based on feedback and test results.
