Were I to scan a tree, I would do one front facing as normal and a second from above looking down the axis to capture the radius and angle of each light, from which the remaining 2 dimensions are obtained in one stroke, so all one needs from the first scan is the height. Faster scanning, more accurate estimates and surely, faster compiling, will be the result. A routine to compile the location estimates based on this type of data structure would be needed (I am not a programmer and new to GitHub)

Placing a camera statically above a tree is pretty difficult, while setting one up on a chair or table somewhere off to the side is possible to do in basically any home. I don't think that this is a great idea taking that into account but as a second type of scanning it may be useful.
I think we choose to stick with keeping the camera stationary on a tripod and then rotating the tree at predetermined increments. Of course, we can go down @feralmathematician route and work out where the camera is - but I think the point of the project is reproducibility at home with very basic equipment (like chairs and a simple webcam)
Also we did try 2 scans alone - but regardless of where the camera is placed - there is some occlusion with branches and stuff - you will end up needing atleast 4 scans from experience.
