you always set style for a range of text. Whether or not that range is selected is not important.
If by "change the style at the caretposition" you mean change the style of the text to the left and right of the caret as far as the style is the same as at the caret position, you might be looking for #26 taken one step further—setting the style instead of getting the style range.
