In other libs (owslib, esgf-pyclient) we drop now Python 2.x support. This can make the transition to 3.x (starting with 3.5) easier.

Are there any plans to work on this issue?

@sterlingbaldwin Migration to python 3.x is ready in esgprep but not tested yet. We are working on a test suite to complete the release. We make our best to have it before summer.
