Separate vegetation into canopy and understory layers #329

  • trees should be separated from the rest of the vegetation into a "canopy" representation (tree_cover + interspace_cover = 1)
  • shrubs, grasses, forbs, and bare-ground represent the "understory" (if trees are present) and they sum to 1 (shrub_cover + grass_cover + forb_cover + bareground_cover = 1)
  • consider separating litter into (i) litter underneath shrubs/grasses/forbs and (ii) litter in shrub/grass/forb interspaces
