Came across a couple LED microswitch listings the other day and was immediately reminded of this project.

Someone could print the button cluster out of resin / transparent filament, paint it partially and achieve backlit keys. I'd take a shot at trying to modify the outermost layer in KiCAD to allow for the extra lighting pins but unfortunately PCB design is one area where I'm wholly hopeless. It would also negatively affect battery life, so any ideas on when to turn on the backlight would be appreciated. Maybe a capacitive button underneath to detect when its being held?
