Mindset of a Mentor

  1. Passion for teaching and mentoring: You are passionate about sharing your knowledge and helping others learn and grow.
  2. Improving open-source projects: You intend to improve the quality and functionality of open-source projects.
  3. Building network: You want to build network with contributors in the open-source community, which can lead to valuable connections and collaborations in the future.
  4. Exposure to new ideas and perspectives: You have the urge to gain new insights and perspectives that you feel can help you to grow personally and professionally.
  5. Paying it forward: You may have been beneficiaries of mentorship or open-source communities yourself, and feel a sense of obligation to give back and help others.

Roles and responsibilities

Goal: High contributor NPS at the end of the Mentoring Program

What can you do to ensure high contributor NPS?

  1. Be clear in setting expectations and reviewing contributor progress
    • Setting up a clear channels for communication
    • Providing context wherever required
  2. Be prompt in giving a response to the mentee on project matters
  3. Have a continuous and iterative process of reviewing PRs to ensure all PRs are reviewed and merged by August 31.
    • Encourage contributors to submit small PRs - easier to review regularly
    • Do not wait until the mid-point check in to review progress
  4. Help the contributor visualize impact of their contributions
    • Involve contributors in product review discussions and relevant forums
  5. Recognize and acknowledge the efforts, progress, and achievements of mentees
    • Recognising milestones
    • Acknowledgement of work in public forums
    • Encouraging contributors to present their progress in internal meetings
  6. Help and/or teach the contributor how to:
    • provide convincing technical argument and constructive discussion
    • be independently motivated and productive
    • solve difficult technical problems
    • communicate more effectively and in the open
  7. Give constructive feedback, be patient, and be respectful
  8. Re-evaluate scope with contributor when significantly ahead or behind expectations
  9. Give a glimpse of a professional & high-stakes working environment
  10. Inform when mentoring capacity will be reduced (e.g., family, health, vacation)
