The dialogue associated with impossible shapes and their pain-attack seems to indicate that the attack works because you see the impossible shape. However, the attack persists even if you're blind, as long as you are still within the monster's range.
Observe that you're still "staring it at it" and getting hit with pain
Expected behavior
If the behavior is unintended, you should be able to mitigate their attacks by e.g. blindfolding yourself.
If the behavior is intended, the dialogues should be changed to match it, or they should gain a clairvoyance field like persons so that they become visible even when you're blind.
