I might use citation gecko as part of a literature review I am working on, and I would like to cite Citation Gecko. I know there are many ways to get a credible DOI for a software, the Journal of Open Source Software may be an appropriate target?

Hey, sorry about the delay on this. I have archived on Zenodo and added citation information to the README.

You can use something like

Walker. B (2022) CitationGecko [Software] https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7068284
