Thank you for filing this request! Please take a few minutes to fill out this template so that we can better understand the request.

Which image would you like to change?

All of them probably

What changes are you requesting?

Updating the installed Python version to 3.13. Currently, 3.9 is installed and this version is already in security updates and will be EoL in less than a year.

What scenario are these changes enabling?

There was a fair amount of major and some breaking changes between these versions of Python and if folks are trying to use up-to-date Python packages, they may encounter issues or unclear warnings generated from running in such an old version of Python.

By how much does this change change the image size?

Comparing the gziped runtime downloads, ~3MB.

Hi @crazy4pi314 , thank you for reporting this issue. We install Python from Azure Linux 2.0, which only supports Python 3.9 right now. Before Python 3.9 goes EoL, we intend to upgrade to Azure Linux 3.0, which supports Python 3.12.

Awesome! Yeah this is a pain and limitation for using Cloud Shell right now for Pythonistas. Is there a roadmap/timeline for the broader migration then?
