Only need --xformers to activate them in the UI, as in get them to show up in Settings > Optimizations since I think they won't otherwise.

You can also manually reinstall them or upgrade them with these commands in cmd or Terminal in your UI folder.

activate
pip install --force-reinstall torch torchvision --index-url https://download.pytorch.org/whl/cu118
pip install --force-reinstall --no-deps --pre xformers

Skip pip install --force-reinstall torch torchvision --index-url https://download.pytorch.org/whl/cu118 if you don't want or need to (re)install Torch 2.

Never needed --reinstall-xformers on my installs either, just --xformers is enough. Having --reinstall might keep reinstalling them on launch.

It's better to reinstall or upgrade xformers manually with pip, if you do need to upgrade it, but if it works it works.

I will be more clear to clear up the confusion

to use xformers you use

--xformers

to upgrade xformers to latest version accepted by automatic1111 you use

--xformers --reinstall-xformers

unfortunately the message you get from automatic1111 when a new version of xformers is needed is to use

--reinstall-xformers

which will not work, will throw an error that it can't find xformer and then you find all these comments, like the one you posted where you need to add a bunch of commands that are unrelated and may or will break other stuff and you lose a lot of time to figure out the issue. if you even manage to figure out the issue

so

use

--xformers --reinstall-xformers

then once it updates remove

--reinstall-xformers
